Yesterday I had get-together with my friends at Sarina Hotel. As one of my friends has jut got married. So he has given us a party in that honor. The party was just rocking. After leaving them I got back to home and had some of free time to hold maintenance of my PC, as it runs very slowly since a week. Now it is Okay! and working well enough. I want to give you some useful tips on how to speed up Windows XP. You are surprised that a Search Engine Optimization Expert are giving advices tips on Windows XP which entirely different than optimization, but I think some of you will be concerned in some of the squeezes I make to all of my PCs to make them quicker. I’ve focused here on the ones which are simple to do and won’t cause problems if you get it wrong, rather than listing registry tweaks etc. Here we go:

First you have to disable Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a program that exploiting huge amount of RAM and can often makes a computer continuously noisy and some times different voices coming out from the PC. So do not get worried about it and paying your attention to simply follow the given steps:

  • Go to Start Menu
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double Click on Add/remove Programs
  • Click the Add/Remove Windows Components.
  • Click the uncheck Indexing Services
  • Click Next and then finish it

Do the optimization of Display setting

How to optimize your display setting, it is clear that Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can cause waste of system recourses. To optimize the display setting, please follow the given steps:

  • Go to Start Menu
  • Click the Settings
  • Click the Control Panel
  • Click the System
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • In the Performance tab click the Settings

Leave only the following ticked:

  • Show shadows under menus
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer
  • Show translucent selection rectangle
  • Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
  • Use visual styles on windows and buttons
  • And then click ok

Speedup Folder Browsing

You may be noticed that every time you unlock My Computer to browse folders that there is a minor delay while in opening the My Computer Window. This is because Windows XP robotically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

  • Open My Computer
  • Click on Tools menu
  • Click on Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
  • Click Apply
  • Click the Ok button
  • Restart Your Computer

Do Disable Performance Counters

By default Windows XP has a function that can perform different utilities such as monitors various areas of your PC’s performance. This can cause a slight delay while opening a folder, file, movie etc. so it is better to shut down it or disable it to avoid such delays. How to disable it, please follow the given steps:

  • Disable download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
  • Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom button below.

Get Better Memory Usage

I think Cacheman can do this. Cacheman improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings are a part of this.
Once you have installed:

  • Go to Show Wizard and select All
  • Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing
  • Exit and Save Cacheman
  • Restart Windowsm.

Optimize internet connection

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.

  • Download and install
  • Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
  • Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
  • Check Optimal Settings then Apply
  • Reboot

Run BootVis - Improve Boot Times

BootVis will considerably improve boot times, please follow the steps:

  • Download and Run
  • Select Trace
  • Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
  • A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
  • Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
  • Reboot.
  • When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete.

Remove the Desktop Huge Items

I’ve observed that desktop background Picture can take a lot of amount of memory and slow down the PC . Removing it will improve performance.

  • Right click on Desktop and select Properties
  • Select the Desktop tab
  • In the Background window select None
  • Click the Ok
